Big Decisions With Ag Implications Loom in Washington

So they've got a deal in Congress on extending the payroll tax cut. Maybe our lawmakers have taken the voters' unhappiness seriously. Maybe they've learned how to overcome paralysis. Maybe there will be fewer hyper-partisan standoffs on future issues. Then again, maybe not.

Farm Bill Possible Yet This Year

There is some indication that a new farm bill could be voted on by Congress before the upcoming Presidential election.

Utah House panel approves bill allowing cities, counties to seize federal lands
In 2010, the Utah Legislature passed legislation that allowed the state to use eminent domain to seize federal lands, although the state has yet to try such a move, and on Thursday, the state House Natural Resources Committee voted 8-1 to advance legislation that would expand that power to cities and counties, despite a warning from legislative counsel that the law is certainly unconstitutional.

Utah state Sen. Stephen Urquhart failed to convince members of the Senate Workforce Services and Community and Economic Development Committee to advance his bill that would have overturned the guest-worker bill passed by the Legislature in 2011.

Panel established to review animal activists’ videos

In an effort to foster a more balanced conversation about farm-animal care and to provide credible feedback to promote continuous improvement, the Center for Food Integrity (CFI) has created an Animal Care Review panel. The panel is made up of animal well-being experts who will be charged with such tasks as examining “undercover” video footage, reporting back to the public with their professional analysis.

Missouri House endorses amendment on raising livestock

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri House has endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment barring voters from enacting laws that affect the raising of livestock through initiative petitions. The proposal would add a "right to raise livestock" to the Missouri Constitution.
