The Pine Beetle Geo PDF Map is a joint venture between the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Fugro Horizons. The purpose of this Geo PDF Map is to show the extent of damage caused by the mountain pine beetle over the past six years. This map covers areas around the Needles region of Custer State Park including the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve and the Black Elk Wilderness Area.
This project consists of two map projects:
- The first map project highlights the broad extent of the 2010 pine beetle infestation. It consists of a low resolution gallery and a high resolution gallery. If one has a high speed internet connection, use the high resolution gallery. If one has a slow internet connection or dial up, use the low resolution gallery. Once you select the gallery index page, you are provided access to 54 individual detailed image tiles that cover approximately two square miles of forested lands. At this scale you can observe the infested trees. Turning on the infested trees GIS polygon highlights the trees that have been infested with mountain pine beetles.
- The second map project allows the user to select a pine beetle infestation theme from 2005 through 2010. The user can also select a true color image from 2005 through 2010. Here the user can see how the mountain pine beetle damage has spread over the past couple of years.
Note: Images from 2005 and 2006 are color infrared images. This time span image gallery covers just the Needles region of Custer State Park and is high resolution, so it will take some time – be patient!
